The Sustainable Tourism Congress was first held in Gümüşhane on May 14-16, 2015, under the title "Sustainable Tourism Congress of the Eastern Black Sea Region" and was hosted by Gümüşhane University's Tourism Faculty.

The second congress, titled the 2nd National Sustainable Tourism Congress, was held in Adrasan / Kumluca / Antalya April 28-30, 2016, and was organized by the Tourism Faculty of Akdeniz University. The congress, which took on an international dimension, was held on November 23-25, 2017, under the title "1st International Sustainable Tourism Congress (ISTC'17)" and organized by the Tourism Faculty of Kastamonu University.

The Tourism Faculty of Gümüşhane University organized the 2nd ISTC, which took place in Gümüşhane from September 20 to 22, 2018. From this congress forward, the advisory board has chosen to hold the ISTC every two years since 2018. The third ISTC occurred on November 12-14, 2021, in partnership with Bingöl and Ordu Universities.
